One of the most common automation mistakes is applying identical automation strategies to very different systems.

Not all applications need:

  • The same test volume

  • The same UI/API ratio

  • The same execution cadence

A content-heavy marketing site, a financial transaction engine, and an internal admin tool have fundamentally different risk profiles.

Automation that ignores this reality becomes inefficient by design.


Automation as a Risk Management Tool

Automation should exist to reduce uncertainty, not to maximize execution speed.

That means asking better questions before writing tests:

  • Where would failure hurt the most?

  • Which behaviors change frequently?

  • Which interfaces are most volatile?

The answers determine what to automate, where, and how deeply.


Finding the Right Mix: UI vs API Tests

There is no universal ratio — and that’s the point.

Instead of fixed percentages, mature teams think in terms of purpose:

Use UI tests to:

  • Validate critical end-to-end workflows

  • Protect high-value user journeys

  • Catch integration issues visible only at the interface layer

Keep these tests few, stable, and intentional.

Use API tests to:

  • Validate business rules and data behavior

  • Cover variations and edge cases

  • Support rapid feedback during development

Let API tests carry breadth, while UI tests provide confidence anchors.

The goal is not balance for its own sake — it is maintainable assurance.

Most importantly, it treats automation as a long-term system, not a short-term acceleration tactic.
